No takers for Home Economics at DU

Lack of awareness about the scope and nature of Home Economics has resulted in very few DU aspirants opting for the subject. Although many have been disappointed by the third list results for other streams, few want to study Home Economics.

So, at a time when getting admission in any Delhi college is as uncertain as sweepstakes, there’s one institution which hasn’t seen any mad dash for seats, at all. The Institute of Home Economics in  Hauz Khas still has 40 seats lying vacant in  the B.SC (hons) home sciences course. College authorities just can’t figure out the reason behind this drought despite the cut-off being slashed to 50 per cent.

Now, Home Sciences is not only about stitching and knitting, as is the general perception. In second year, the students also get to opt for specialisation in five streams – food and nutrition, fabric and apparel science, human development, resources management and communication and extension. It is a curriculum offers students huge opportunities to be employed in any of the sectors related to the streams.

What in your view could be the reason for fall in popularity of this course? Do you think the course needs re-branding? A glamming up of sorts?

The course definitely has career opportunities opening up after completion, then what could be the reason that not many people are opting for the course? Does image play a role in course selection?

  • The course of Home Science has vast career opportunities once someone completes it. Since there is not much info available about such course….students don’t even think abt it. Or they take a mere guess from the name that it may be a course of some old era. But they are ready to pay the high fees to Private Institutes or Polytechniques offering the same course with some glam sham and name …with beautiful and attractive brochures.

Nobody wants to do a Behenji types course. Such courses should go for a Makeover.
