After lying low for the first few days of the new year, the Delhi Traffic Police has started challaning errant drivers on a war footing. In the last three days, the cops have issued more than 6,000 challans for various traffic rule violations.
Along with the new year, the cops have also changed their way of tackling errant drivers. In their ‘Carpet Bombing’-style campaign, they are making sure that no errant driver escapes. Traffic cops are coordinating with each other so that if an errant driver escapes at one place, he is caught at the next place. The Traffic patrol team plays an important role here. “They can’t escape,” a senior traffic police officer said.
Various teams have been formed to prosecute different categories of vehicles like — private cars, TSRs and commercial vehicles. Apart from that, traffic policemen on Pulsar bikes are patrolling the city’s roads to catch offenders.
On Friday, close to 4,000 challans were issued. On Saturday, the cops prosecuted more than 2,000 drivers.
“Our aim is to make the city’s roads safe. We have pledged to make the roads safer than last years. For that we need to educate people and make them understand that following traffic rules is the best way,” a senior traffic police officer said.
Although the traffic police is keeping an eye on every traffic violation, its focus is on crossing the stop line, unauthorised parking, minor driving and issues related with auto-rickshaws.
Suggest areas that traffic cops should focus their campaign on?

Put an end to all the gimmicky rules and regulations laid down by researchers and experts who sit in their labs and don’t even know “how much does a litre of milk costs”.
Ask the legitimate users of the transport system and they will give you the rules that will bring respite to everyone (even the challan-ing traffic police!)
Charge for dark window screens (besides the abductions and rape factor, the following vehicle cannot see what’s in front of the leading vehicle!)
Charge for polluting vehicles (and for God sake do not rely on pollution certificates, a human being’s eyes are good enough to see if the vehicle is smoking!)
Charge for honking
Charge for missing head lamps
Charge for missing side view mirrors
Charge for missing tail lamps
Charge for missing/illegible number plate
Charge for talking on phone while driving
Charge for roadside parking that is obstructing traffic
Charge for driving in the wrong lane (but of course we need the lanes first!)
Charge for driving slow on the fast lane (read the international research done on the most common causes of traffic snarls!)
Charge 2-wheelers for driving in the fast lane
Charge auto-rickshaws for driving in the fast lane
STOP charging for over speeding (or stop car manufacturers from flaunting and producing cars that do 0-60 in 4 sec. )
Get your basics right –
Intelligent traffic signal system (should operate according to the quantum of traffic!)
Good roads (do you care?)
A cop at each signal (recruit the unemployed!)
PAY THEM WELL

Unless police is paid rich or made upright /self reliant, more stern laws makes corrupt more corrupt and fatty.Defaulters makes them more corrupt since they feel lighter to shed half of the fixed fine than the heavy one thus both are happy lot. No one listen to marshalls as all are without authority.Equally we are also at fault by not educating our children rather our self indulging in these wrong practices.Worst situation to imagine is that, most of the road vehicles (all types) are driven by school drop-outs and are pitched against well educated lot hence no compatibility kept on road thereby vicious circle continues
